Reader Suggestion for Liturgical Change

POSTED MARCH 11 2009

A Liturgical Change?

From time to time we hear from readers, of all persuasions, who express strong feelings for a variety of different reasons. Recently, we received word from someone who was so impressed by the comments of Cardinal Sean O’Malley of Boston that he proposed a change in the liturgy with the inclusion of a new creed.

As you may remember, the Cardinal reportedly said, the day before Ash Wednesday, that the Shoah, or Jewish Holocaust, was "the greatest crime in human history." Before we proceed, we must say, in all fairness, that some people may be troubled by this statement. Specifically, the source of this concern could be that in the Cardinal’s mind, with American Jewish leaders looking on, the killing of an estimated 6 million Jews during World War II was greater than the slaughter of 11 million Christians during the Roman Empire, or greater than the killing by starvation of 14 million Ukrainian Christians by the Soviets during the 1930s, or the slaughter and persecution of millions of non-Jews by the Nazis, or the massacre of tens of millions of Christians who died at the hands of persecutors during the Twentieth Century. And, apparently, in the mind of the good Cardinal, the Shoah was a greater crime than the killing of the Son of God nearly 2,000 years ago. These things can legitimately cause concern in the minds of many of the Faithful.

But be all that as it may, and without any comment one way or another, here is a suggestion submitted by our afore-mentioned kindly reader. The reader proposed that the following be said by the faithful on a daily basis, or at least during every Mass:

Dear Editor:

What a great thing! Finally, a Catholic prelate who understands the importance of the Holocaust. Cardinal O’malley is to be commended. Hopefully, he will now take the next step and change the liturgy. I offer the following as a creed to be recited by the faithful at mass, or, just on their own:

I believe in the Holocaust.

I believe 6 million Jews were killed.

I believe Adolf Hitler personally gave the order to kill 6 million Jews.

I believe the Jews died in gas chambers.

I believe the Jews were burned alive in ovens until their bones became ash.

I believe the Jews were turned into soap.

I believe the Jews were made into lampshades.

I believe the Jews were made into human guinea pigs.

I believe anyone who questions or denies any of this is an anti-semite, a grave sin in the church.

I believe the Jews are the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human beings I have ever known in my life.

And I believe the rest of the stuff that the Church teaches.

Amen.

Thank you and keep up the good work!

Sincerely yours,

RJ
